Gifted & Talented at Highfield Humanities College

Overview

Highfield Humanities College recognises the importance of ensuring provision for "Gifted" and "Talented" students.  We have a Gifted & Talented cohort of pupils, we aim to recognise and respect all gifts and talents whether they are academic, artistic, athletic or social. We provide the appropriate challenging support to assist the students who have been identified as "Gifted" or "Talented" to ensure that they reach their full potential.  The extension and enrichment of of our Gifted and Talented students is the responsibility of all the schools staff including Teaching Staff, Senior Management, Associate Staff (non teaching) and school governors.

Gifted Pupils

Approximately 7% of each year group is identified as "Gifted" and these are pupils who have been identified as being academically able or gifted in the following subjects:

  • Mathematics

  • English

  • Science

  • History

  • Geography

  • RE

  • Modern Foreign Languages.

When selecting the cohort factors such as motivation and personality are also considered so that we are not simply identifying those who are already high achievers. A range of methods of identification are used involving information obtained from a combination of some or all of the following sources:
  • Cognitive Ability Tests (CATS)
  • SAT Scores from Key Stages 2 & 3
  • Individual and Collective Teacher Nominations
  • Information From Previous Teacher\School (including Primary School information)

Talented Students

Approximately 3% of each year group is identified as "Talented" and these are Students who demonstrate a high level of skill in the following areas, which cannot be measured using CAT or SAT scores:

  • Drama
  • Music
  • Art
  • Physical Education
  • Dance
  • ICT
  • Design Technology

When selecting the cohort we rely heavily upon information supplied by Teaching Staff and also consideration is taken in respect of nationally recognised skill-specific exams in areas such as Music and Dance.
