Science at Highfield Humanities College

All pupils in Key Stage 3 are taught Science for 3 periods per week in one of our well equipped, purpose built, Science Labs. In Years 10 and 11 all pupils then move on to study GCSE Double Award Science.

Highfield Science Department consists of 11 Teachers, 9 Laboratories and 2 Laboratory Technicians. We also have 5 preparation rooms allowing a high level of practical investigation in each course.

The Science Faculty has strong links with local primary schools and aims to make the transition between primary and secondary Science education smooth. The students prior knowledge and understanding is assessed and lessons are delivered to enable the students to progress. A variety of teaching strategies are used to meet the needs of all students.

At KS3, students will complete work on Life Processes and Living Things, Materials and their Properties, Physical Processes and Scientific Enquiry in preparation for their KS3 Tests towards the end of Year 9.

At KS4, there are two tiers of assessment: Higher (A* - D) and Foundation (C – G).

Students in set 1 will follow the AQA Double Modular Science GCSE. In this Double Award, candidates follow 12 modules. 6 of the modules are assessed by modular tests making up 30% of the marks. The other 6 modules are in the terminal examination and make up 50% of the marks. Coursework accounts for 20% of the marks.

Students in sets 2, 3 and 4 will follow the 21st Century Science GCSE courses, which are being developed to offer a valid, flexible Science education to meet the needs of different students. There will be two GCSE courses each with different character. The package offers a modern, interesting and challenging curriculum matched to the needs of young people.
