Geography

Accommodation and Equipment

All lessons currently take place in the temporary accommodation (P block) in the Humanities suite of classrooms.  All classrooms have interactive whiteboards which are used widely both by teaching staff and by pupils to deliver presentations.  We make extensive use of ICT and pupils regularly use the laptop trolley in order to carry out independent research.  We also have a wide range of specialist Geography resources.

Staffing

Five teachers currently teach Geography: Mr M Foolkes, Miss N Spence, Mrs K Curry, Mrs D Austin and Miss D O’Neill.  All teachers are part of the Humanities faculty with a range of different skills and experience.

Curriculum Overview KS3

In years 7 and 8 Geography is taught through the integrated Humanities curriculum.  In Year 9 pupils specialise in a discreet course in Geography in order to prepare them for a GCSE Geography course at KS4.  Pupils study topics such as extreme weather, volcanoes and earthquakes, the rainforest and environmental issues such as global warming.

We currently offer AQA GCSE Geography Specification A.  We offer this as a short course or full course and pupils may be entered at foundation level or higher level.

Topics include:

  • The Restless Earth
  • Water on the Land
  • The Coastal Zone

At the end of Year 10 all undertake a fieldwork investigation and use this to complete their controlled assessment.

In Year 11 pupils study three human Geography topics for Paper 2 which is examined in June of Year 11.
Topics include:

  • Tourism
  • Changing Urban Environments
