Admissions

Highfield is an over-subscribed school and parents wishing to take up places in the next academic year are advised to make Highfield their FIRST CHOICE in the admissions process.
Highfield Humanities College is a secondary school with the overall administrative structure of Blackpool Council. It has a fully comprehensive intake for children aged 11 to 16. This means that any child may be admitted regardless of ability level, interest or religion. This wide range of ability is one of our key strengths for it means we have a complete cross section of children: from those with considerable learning difficulties to those who will go on to university level, including Cambridge and Oxford.
The major constraint to entry is the actual limit placed on us by our ability to accommodate pupils. All schools have a limit called the Standard Number, which is the maximum we are allowed to enrol in any particular year. At Highfield our Standard Number is 224. For many years, that number has been 'over-subscribed', which means that more parents want their children to come to Highfield than we have room. Clearly, this causes problems, not only for parents, but also for the LEA who have to decide the fairest way of allocating places to all schools.
Children's Services Authority will allocate places at the school strictly in accordance with its published 'Over-subscription Criteria'. Admissions to Blackpool Secondary Schools 'A Guide for Parents' brochure is issued to parents each year and explains the order of priority in which places are allocated.
The most important consideration is where the child lives, for the authority will attempt to give a place to any child who lives close to the school. The authority will also attempt to keep families together, so if an older sister or brother attends the school it is likely that a younger child will also be granted a place. There are other considerations and information is made available to parents in a booklet issued by the authority each year. More detailed information can be obtained from the Education Office on Clifton Road, Blackpool [Tel. 01253 477477].
An appeals procedure is available to any parent who feels that their child should be admitted even though the Authority has been unable to offer a place. Details about this procedure are available from the Education Office.
We welcome visits from parents who have much younger children and who are visiting schools and assessing their suitability for their children's education.
