Headteacher’s Remarks
Congratulations to the students of 2009 and another historic year for the school. 19 students passed their AS Level Religious Studies exam with 95% at grade C or above. Our GCSEs were the best ever with 69% achieving 5+A*-C and 47% 5+A*-C (including English and Maths). My thanks go to the staff, students and parents for the input they have all made to the high quality teaching and learning that goes on at Highfield.
Learning is one of the most important and exciting things we do in life and at Highfield we aim to provide a lively and friendly atmosphere where learning can flourish. We want to develop a desire for learning in our students, a desire that will inspire the hearts and minds of our young generation. Our guiding principle is for every student to succeed. We believe that success is achieved through hard work. We also appreciate that learning is a social activity and teamwork is fundamental. That is why we foster the respect for oneself and others, co-operation and collaboration. "Working Together" is a key phrase throughout school life at Highfield. Truly successful education is a partnership between School, Students, Parents and our Community.
We aim to develop a future generation who have the self-confidence to use their talents and skills for their own benefit and that of the community in which they live. We endeavour to enable our students to become confident and successful learners who have a ‘can do’ attitude to do their best. We also want our students to be responsible and effective members of our school and local community. There are many opportunities for our students to develop their talents.
It goes without saying that our students deserve the best 21st Century education we can offer. We make every effort to offer the best academic education, pastoral care and moral direction. We strive for academic excellence by providing opportunities suitable for each individual. Our students continue in education and training. We are proud to see them develop into well qualified and highly motivated young people who leave Highfield ready to face the challenges of their future.
A wide range of academic and extra curricular opportunities encourage involvement and the development of students’ skills and talents. Young people need opportunities to express their creativity and to appreciate that education is not a process confined to the classroom. We aspire to enable pupils to develop their abilities talents be it in music, sport, drama, dance or public speaking and moreover, to develop characteristics such as initiative, enthusiasm, commitment and self-discipline. We value teamwork skills, resilience, perseverance, leadership, endurance and perhaps most importantly, tolerance, acceptance and understanding.
A committed team of well qualified teachers, supported by dedicated associate staff, promote the values and ethos essential for our Humanities College. We look at new and innovative ways of teaching and learning that will engage our students so that they achieve the very best standards. We do, however, uphold traditional standards of discipline, dress, courtesy and good manners and we provide a supportive and caring environment in which each student can develop self-discipline and self-reliance.
We are committed to equip our students for a rapidly changing future by developing in young people the ability to be resilient, adaptable and versatile with the skills and abilities vital for the 21st century.
